History of Medicinal Use of Plants

The use medicinal plants has lasted thousands of years since last. Health experts on the ancient Egyptians 2500 years BC has beenuse of medicinal plants. A large number of prescription use of plant products for the treatment of various diseases, symptoms and diagnosis are listed in Papyrus Ehers.

Ancient Greeks also keeps records on the use of plant namely drug Hyppocrates (466 BC), Theophrastus (372 BC) and Pedanios Dioscorides (100 BC) makes the set of detailed information about thousands of medicinal plants in De Materia Medica.

In the mid-seventeenth century to a botanist named Jacobus Rontius (1592 - 1631) announced the efficacy of herbs in his book De Indiae Untriusquere Naturali et Medica. Although only 60 species of plants studied, but this book is the basis of the research of medicinal herbs by NA van Rheede tot Draakestein (1637 - 1691) in his Hortus indicus malabaricus.

issue back to nature and the crisis that resulted in a prolonged decline in purchasing power of modern medicines are relatively more expensive. Natural medicine are also considered almost no harmful side effects. The opinion is not necessarily true because to know the benefits and side effects of the drug is definitely needed research and preclinical testing and clinical trials.

Dissemination of information about the results of research and testing has been done to natural medicine should be a concern for all parties because it involves a safety factor use of the drug. Some things to know before using drug ingredients nature are advantages and disadvantages of traditional medicine and medicinal plants.

The advantages of natural medicine, among others:

1 Side effects of traditional medicine are relatively smaller when used correctly and appropriately, both the right dose, time of use, how to use, accuracy of materials selection, and accuracy of selection of traditional medicine or medicinal herbs for specific indications.

2 The existence of complementary effects or synergism in the herb and drug / bioactive components medicinal plants. In a traditional herb medicine is generally composed of several types medicinal plants which have the effect of supporting each other to achieve effectiveness of treatment. Formulation and composition of these ingredients are made as accurately as possible so as not contradictory effects, even to be chosen mutually supportive herb species towards a desired effect.

3 In one plant can have more than one pharmacological effect. Active substances in plants drugs are generally in the form of secondary metabolites, whereas one plant can produce some secondary metabolites, thereby allowing these plants have more than one pharmacological effects.

4 Traditional medicine is more suitable for metabolic diseases and degenerative. Change of consumption patterns lead to metabolic disorders and physiology of the body in line with
process of degeneration. That include metabolic diseases such as diabetes (diabetes),
hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), uric acid, kidney stones, and hepatitis. While that includes
degenerative diseases such as rheumatism (arthritis), asthma (shortness of breath), ulcers (pepticstomach), haemorrhoid (ambein / hemorrhoids) and senile (lost of memory). To treat the disease takes a long time so that more appropriate use of natural medicines because of the effects relatively smaller side.

In addition to its superiority, natural medicine also has some weaknesses that also an obstacle in the development of traditional medicine, among others: the
pharmacological effects weak, raw materials have not been standardized and is hygroscopic and volumines, has not performed clinical trials and easily contaminated various microorganisms. The efforts of traditional drug development can be reached by a variety of ways with particular approaches, thus found forms of traditional medicine that has been proven efficacy and safety, can be justified scientifically as well as meet medical indications, the drug group fitoterapi or phytopharmaca. To get the product phytopharmaca must go through several stages (test pharmacology, toxicity and clinical trials) to be answer and address these weaknesses.
